At the bow of a ship on a stormy sea, a crewman conducts an experiment by standing on a bathroom scale. In calm waters, the scale reads 183 lb. During the storm, the crewman finds a maximum reading of 230 lb and a minimum reading of 138 lb. A. Find the maximum upward acceleration experienced by the crewman

B. Find the maximum downward acceleration experienced by the crewman

    In calm water there is no acceleration so reading

    R = mg = 183

    m = 183 / 32

    At maximum upward acceleration reading

    R₁ = mg + ma

    = 183 + (183 / 32) x a

    230 = 183 + (183 / 32) x a

    a = 8.22 ft / s²

    B)

    In case of downward acceleration, reading

    R₂ = mg - ma

    138 = 183 - (183/32) a

    a = 7.87 m / s²
