A motorist traveling at 18 m/s encounters a deer in the road 48 m ahead. If the maximum acceleration the vehicle's brakes are capable of is - 6 m/s 2, what is the maximum reaction time of the motorist that will allow her or him to avoid hitting the deer? Answer in units of s.

    Speed = 18 m/s

    Distance = 48 m

    Deceleration = - 6 m/s 2

    Time = Speed / Distance

    = 18 / 48 = 0.375 s 2

    Time - deceleration = 0.375 - (-6)

    = 6.375 s 2

    So total time reaction is 6.375 s 2
