A ball thrown horizontally at vi = 26.0 m/s travels a horizontal distance of d = 52.0 m before hitting the ground. From what height h was the ball thrown?

    Explanation:

    We can use the kinematic equation,

    s = ut + ½at²

    Where

    s = displacement

    u = initial velocity

    t = time taken

    a = acceleration

    Using the equation in the horizontal direction,

    52 = 26t + ½*0*t²,. a = 0 because no unbalanced force act on object in that direction

    So t = 2 s

    Then using the equation in vertical direction,

    s = 0*t + ½*g*2², u = 0 because initial vertical velocity is 0

    We get,

    s = 20 m
