A wall is built of two metals (stainless steel and lead) that are in thermal contact with each other. If the temperature difference across the steel plate is 17.79 K and the plates are 1.471 cm (steel) and 2.416 cm (lead) thick, what is the temperature difference across the entire wall? K

    given data

    temperature difference steel ΔT = 17.79 K

    steel L = 1.471 cm

    lead L = 2.416 cm

    to find out

    temperature difference across wall

    solution

    we know that here heat transfer by steel and lead are same

    and

    heat transfer = k*A*ΔT / L ... 1

    so

    H (lead) = H (steel)

    k*A*ΔT / L = k*A*ΔT / L ... 2

    here we know

    k for steel = 14.4 W/mK

    k for lead = 36.6 W/mK

    so put here all value in equation 2

    k*ΔT / L = k*ΔT / L

    36.6*ΔT / 2.416 = 14.4*17.79 / 1.471

    ΔT = 11.50 K

    so

    entire wall temperature difference = 11.50 + 17.79

    entire wall temperature difference = 29.29 K
