During an experiment, the temperature of a liquid was measured several times. The temperatures, in degree Fahrenheit, listed in increasing order, are 63, 67, x, 80, and 82. If the arithmetic mean of these temperatures is equal to the median, what is the value of x?

    Answer: x = 73

    Explanation:

    Firstly, arithmetic mean is the average of the set of numbers given in question while median is the number that is placed at the middle of sets of distribution after been arranged in either ascending or descending order.

    According to the question the mean will give us sum total of the number divided by the total numbers given i. e

    63 + 67 + x + 80 + 82/5

    Since the numbers are already listed in increasing order, median will be 'x'

    Since the arithmetic mean is equal to the median according to the question, we then have;

    63 + 67 + x + 80 + 82/5 = x

    Cross multiplying we have;

    63 + 67 + x + 80 + 82 = 5x

    292+x = 5x

    292 = 5x - x

    292 = 4x

    x = 292/4

    x = 73
