Heat is provided to the plant by combustion of coal, and the thermal sink for the plant is Lake Fayette, a manmade reservoir. Using the given data, determine the rate of heat rejection to Lake Fayette (MW).

    It is obtained by finding the difference in heat supplied and the work obtained from the system

    Given

    Efficiency = 40% = 0.4

    Power produced/output = 1760MW

    The expression for heat supplied rate is;

    Qs=P/η

    where P is power output and η is the efficiency

    Qs=1760/0.4 = 4400MW

    The expression for rate of heat rejection is given by;

    Qr=Qs-P

    where Qr is rate of heat rejection, Qs=4400 MW and P=1760MW

    Qr = Qs-P

    Qr=4400-1760 = 2640MW
