To assist with a class demonstration, a student (whose mass is 60 kg) filled a water balloon with 2 kg of water. He then climbed to the second floor (10 metres) of the school and held the balloon out of a window. How much work did the student do?

    Explanation:

    To solve such problems we must use the definition of work. Which tells us that work is equal to the product of force by a distance.

    The force will be equal to the product of the mass combined by the gravitational force.

    F = m * g

    where:

    m = combined mass = 60 + 2 = 62 [kg]

    g = gravity = 9.81 [m/s^2]

    F = 62 * 9.81 = 608.22 [N]

    And the work done.

    W = F * d

    W = 608.22 * 10

    W = 6082.2 [J] units in Joules
