Matter is made out of atoms - assuming the conditions are not very extreme. In neutral atoms negative electrons orbit around the positive nucleus. The nucleus is composed of positive protons and neutral neutrons. In the most common isotope of Hydrogen a single electron orbits a single proton. What is the magnitude of the electric charge represented by the the electrons in 1.57 kg of distilled water? (A 2 liter pop bottle can hold 2 kg of water.) Hints: one mole of water contains 6.0221*1023 water molecules. One water molecule has ten electrons: eight from the Oxygen atom and two from the two Hydrogen atoms. The electric charge of an electron is 1.6022*10-19 C. This is called elementary charge. The molar mass of water is Mwater = 18 g/mol, which means that the mass of one mole of water is 18 grams.

    1.57 kg of water = 1.57 / 18 mol

    =.52526 x 10²³ molecules
