Two cylinders A and B at the same temperature contain the same quantity of the same kind of gas. Cylinder A has three times the volume of cylinder B. What can you conclude about the pressures the gases exert? The pressure in A must be one-third the pressure in B. The pressure in A is three times the pressure in B. We can conclude nothing about the pressures. The pressures must be equal.

    We shall apply gas law formula to solve the problem

    gas law formula is as follows

    P V / T = n R, P, V and T are pressure, volume and temperature of n mole of a gas.

    quantity of gas is same. That means n is same. R is universal constant so right hand side term is constant for gas in both the cylinders.

    For gas in cylinder A and B, this equation can be written in the following form

    Pa Va / Ta = Pb Vb / Tb

    Given, Va = 3 Vb

    Ta = Tb, temperature is same

    Putting these values in the equation above,

    Pa 3Vb / Tb = Pb Vb / Tb

    3 Pa = Pb

    Pa = 1/3 x Pb
