A man is parachuting when he accidentally drops his wallet. The man is falling at a rate of 2.2 m/s and the wallet hits the ground with a speed relative to the parachuter of 9.5 m/s. What is the speed of the wallet when it lands relative to the ground?

    Answer: the speed of the wallet is 11.7 m/s with respect to the ground, when it hits the ground.

    Explanation: The velocities are in the same direction and add in this case. At time of the impact, the wallet has a velocity of 9.5 m/s relative to the man, whose velocity is constant at 2.2 m/s relative to the ground. Therefore the velocity of the wallet relative to the ground is 9.5 + 2.2 = 11.7 m/s.
