Why might political parties write platforms before presidential elections

Political parties write platforms before presidential elections as well as other elections so that they can inform their constituents and potential voters where they stand on certain issues. By releasing position statements it informs voters where they stand in regards to certain issues and how they propose to govern once they are elected.
