During the pueblo uprising of 1680, over 400 Spaniards were killed. The remaining survivors numbering over 2,000 were driven south towards Mexico. For 12 years, the Pueblos restored their culture and religious practices which were abolished by the Spanish Conquistadores. However, they were plagued by drought and attacks by rival tribes. In 1692, the Spanish military returned and took back control of the land.
