    Explicit memory refers to a conscious and intentional recollection of information, while implicit memory is an unconscious and unintended recollection.

    Both these types of memory are classified within the long-term memory.

    Implicit memory, also known as procedural memory, is unconscious and it is the one that comes into play when an individual is learning something that will become automatic such as driving a car or riding a bike.

    Explicit memory, or declarative memory, is a conscious recollection. It stores general knowledge of people, places, etc. It is divided into:

    Semantic memory: all the information the individual has learnt throughout his/her life such as historic events, knowing the name and meaning of something and it is primal for understanding the language. Episodic memory: an autobiographical memory, which refers to all the information surrounding the individual's personal life.
