After World War II, Georgia was no longer a largely agricultural state. The rural population diminished exceptionally after the Great Depression's New Deal Program, named "the Agricultural Adjustment Act", decreased the use of sharecroppers and increased the use of machines. Also, the GI Bill encouraged war veterans to attend college and many of these veterans did not choose careers in agriculture.
