Martin, a 32-year-old human relations administrator at a university, believes that all professors over age 50 are incapable of learning the new educational technologies and are content to keep presenting their same "tired, boring" lectures. He often expresses these views to other administrators and does not encourage any of the "older" faculty members to attend professional development meetings related to new teaching approaches nor does he suggest that the university send them to any of the technology conferences.     Ageism, often called age age prejudice, is a form of discrimination of individuals because of their age. It happens when people are denied opportunities or resources as a result of being judged to old. This term was first used by Robert Neil Butler in 1969.

    The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination in people that are over 40 years old, meaning that their age is not taken into consideration when seeking employment.

    Ageists attitudes (stereotypes against old people) as used by Martin, often describe older people as weak, fragile, 'past sale date' and without mental or physical capacities to learn or acquire new skills.
