Eastern Oklahoma is the location of tribal headquarters for many Native American groups because many tribes were forced to relocate to this region.

When the Indian Removal Act was passed on May 28, 1830, it gave power to the President of the United States to remove Native American Indians form their former territories. and that is what President Andrew Jackson did. He moved the Indians west to the Mississippi River. That is why Indian tribes such as the Cherokee were removed from their ancestors' lands and made the long and dangerous trip to the new Indian Territory in Oklahoma in what historians call the Trail of Tears.
