How did the power of the Catholic Church expand in the Middle Ages? Europe was unified under the idea that people must convert to Christianity. The church assumed governmental duties and created a church hierarchy. The pope had the same power the Roman emperor once had. The people began to elect their priests, bishops, and cardinals.
