Why did John Lewis change his speech

So basically in his original speech Lewis slammed Kennedy and the Democrats pretty hard. Lewis also promised to "march through the South, through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did,". This would cause outrage and conflict so it was changed to a more appropriate and civilised speech
