In 1958, Mildred Jeter, an African American woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, married in the District of Columbia. They then moved to the state of Virginia. Soon after the couple was charged with violating Virginia's ban on interracial marriages. The Lovings pled guilty to the charge and were sentenced to one year in jail. However, the trial judge suspended the sentence for 25 years with one condition the Lovings were to
