Why is it possible to span only a narrow space with stone?

    The simplest method for building in early times was using stones. Stones are known for their tensile strength or their ability to withstand bending. When building with stones, a horizontal beam or lintel across the open space between two posts or some type of vertical support is used. Since they need such support only narrow spaces can be built with stone.
