Destruction of forest increases level of atmospheric carbon as trees carry out photosynthesis by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen so removing trees means less carbon dioxide is being removed from the atmosphere. Also, trees store some carbon dioxide and this is released if they are burnt during the deforestation.
