Earth's organisms require a constant supply of energy to meet their needs. Describe where most of this energy initially comes from and how it flows through the organisms as it moves through food webs and energy pyramids. Also explain how some of the energy is "lost" to the environment.

The energy originally comes from the sun through plants and photosynthesis. Herbivores and omnivores eat the plants and gain the energy that was being stored in the plant. Omnivores and carnivores eat the creatures that ate the plants and gain most of that energy. That step will go on and on forever, feeding and supplying energy to the creatures that need it. The carcasses of the eaten creatures will be eaten by scavengers and the remains decomposed by fungi and bacteria. Some of the energy will be "lost" at each level through urine or stool (poop).
