Why would we want to study mass specific gill surface areas instead of simply comparing absolute gill surface areas among the fish species?

    Because rates of respiration and blood-oxygen diffusion would vary from species-to-species in fish, and by studying this via the mass of various fish we could determine the laws concerning gill-based respiration and blood oxygenation in fish of various sizes.
