Certain proteins will only accept certain ions or materials. Depending on the protein type, a "key" (ligand) is needed to open the passage of the protein, allowing the material to pass through.

Membrane proteins make it so than the cell can only select certain materials, protecting it from foreign materials and keeping it efficient in its function.
