Why is it important to constantly swirl the contents of the beaker after the catalase has been added to the hydrogen peroxide?

    Catalase is an enzyme which breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic by-product of metabolism, so it is essential for it to be broken down quickly, or else, it would cause damage to cells. Without the aid of catalase, decomposition would take much longer, thus, would not be fast enough to sustain human life. Some experiments are done to determine the rate of an enzymatic reaction between catalase and peroxides. In decomposition reaction of peroxide by catalase, the easiest molecule to measure would be oxygen as a final product. While certain procedures are applied in determining the amount of oxygen, the techniques of swirling are applied for accuracy of reactions. Swirling is important because it makes it possible for further collisions to take place between the catalase enzyme and the hydrogen peroxide. More collisions mean the reaction is occurring to the fullest achievable extent.
