Somatic mutation is defined as the genetic alteration of a cell and it affects it because the alteration can be passed to the progeny of the mutated cell in the course of cell division. This type of alterations are caused by the environment exposure to things like ultraviolet radiation or to certain chemicals. All cells that descend from the mutated one will be affected.
