How does adaptation explain the patterns of distribution of plant and animals species in the world

Adaption is what living organisms do to survive better in their environment. So the pattern distribution of plants and animals species differentiate because over time the species that can survive better will live on and produce more of it's kind, while the other dies off due to lack of beneficial traits.
