Cyanobacteria are the only organisms that use oxygenic photosynthesis. They were primarily responsible for the Great Oxidation Event, which resulted in the rapid oxygenation of the atmosphere. While other organisms were able to produce small amounts of oxygen through early photosynthesis, it was in water and insufficient quantities to make a difference in the atmosphere.
