Why are mutations important to the theory of evolution?

    Mutations basically change a characteristic or trait of an organism. As this trait gets passed down, the species will all start getting the new mutated trait. This would explain why species change over time.

    So a change in an organism's DNA can cause changes in all aspects of its life. Mutations are essential to evolution; they are the raw material of genetic variation. Without mutation, evolution could not occur.
