This is called pulmonary edema. The accumulation of fluid in the tissue and air spaces of the lungs can can occur either because of a failure of the left heart ventricle to completely remove blood from pulmonary circulation or because of an injury to the lung tissue. Pulmonary edema leads to impaired gas exchange and can result in respiratory failure.
