A transient ischemic attack has the same causes as that of an ischemic stroke, and it's also called a mini-stroke. They can happen when a clot blocks the blood supply to a part of the brain. Unlike the ischemic stroke, a transient ischemic attack has a blockage more brief and usually doesn't cause permanent damage.
