Why is there more producers than consumers in an ecosystem?

    Because it takes about 10 prey animals to support 1 predator species.

    Most prey animals are herbivores or at least eat smaller animals which are herbivours.

    Making sugars, proteins from sunlight, air, water and minerals by plants, takes a lot longer than Animals re - using them by eating the plants.
