Type 1 diabetes is normally diagnosed in childhood whereas type 2 can develop in adulthood. Type 1 isn't associated with excess body weight whereas type 2 is. Type 1 is treated with insulin pumps but type 2 is usually treated initially without medication or with tablets. Type 1 can't be controlled without insulin but if you have type 2, you might be able to be taken off the medication.
