    The answer is 10. Both essential and nonessential amino acids have essential roles in the organism. But, essential amino acids are an essential part of the diet. They cannot be made by the body and must be obtained in the diet. Ten essential amino acids are: histidine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, and arginine (but only for the young).
