The Aequorin protein is part of the bioluminescent that is a bit different from the norm. It was studied that biolumninescents didn't require oxygen. With the Aequorin, it was found to stably coelenterazine and oxygen; required for it to regenerate and be active. The way that it produces the classic bioluminescent light is when it reacts with Ca2+photoproteins. This is mainly seen within the Aequorin jellyfish.
