Where are new skin cells produce to replace old cells that have been shed?

The production of the new skin cells occurs at the basal layer of the epidermis.

The skin is composed of three layers:

1. The epidermis - The outermost layer of the skin. Waterproof with the protective role and which serves as a barrier to infection. It also has its own layers (from the top) : stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (only on hands and bottoms of feet), stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale.

The cells of stratum basale are constantly going through mitosis to produce new cells (keratinocytes) and as new cells are formed, the existing cells are pushed superficially away from the stratum basale.
