"Each parent produces sex cells through meiosis. In humans, most cells are diploid (have two copies of each chromosome, and the chromosomes carry the genes).

Sex cells go through meiosis where they replicate the DNA once but divide twice. This produces cells with half the genetic information (one copy of each chromosome), these are called haploid gametes. "

"Then, a gamete from each parent fuses at the cell membranes. The nuclei then fuse, creating a new diploid cell (1/2 the genetic info from mom, 1/2 from dad)."
