Peptidoglycan or murein is a polymer which consists of sugars and amino acids. It is the main component of the bacteria's cell wall where it forms a mesh-like layer outside the plasma membrane. The difference between Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria is in their peptidoglycan layer. Gram-positive bacteria have much thicker peptidoglycan layer and it represents the 90% of their dry weight. It gives strength to the bacteria structure.
