Primary consumers (herbivores) eat plants (producers), and secondary consumers (carnivores) eat herbivores. So the fallout of primary consumers, from loss of plants, will eventually lead to starvation of secondary consumers. It's sort of a chain reaction that takes longer the further you go away from the initial disruption in the ecological balance.
