    Eventually when there are enough environmental or internal attackings on a gene the gene will mutate. Which changes the gene so the adaptation will be more effective.

    Both. If enough of the genes are changed it will form a new kind. i. e. If you change the gene of hair color in a dog doesn't make it any less dog just little more unique.
