If the nurse notices that the bag of TPN solution has been infusing for 24 hours; not minding how much of the solution is left, the nurse should discontinue the current solution, change the tubing, and hang a new bag of TPN solution. It is not safe to hang a bag of TPN for more than 24 hours due to the risk of infection.

Total Parenteral Nutrition contains calories that are calculated to provide nutrients in the body and is only good for 24 hours at room temperature thus the nurse should discontinue the current solution eventhough there is still remaining 300 ml of solution.
