Ponds tend to consists of larger areas of water whereas lakes consists of smaller areas of water. Lakes tend to larger and deeper than ponds whereas ponds tend to be more shallow and support greater variety of aquatic plants. This is just a general characteristics comparison and may not be applicable to all lakes and ponds.
