Mitosis allows the cell to duplicate itself into an exact new cell. One cell becomes two cells during mitosis. The function of mitosis is to replace dead, missing, or damaged cells. The skin for example loses cells throughout the day. Through mitosis, the cells are replaced so that the skin can continue to function.
