What is the production of an offspring throught the combination of egg and sperm

The combination of egg and sperm gives rise to a zygote. Sexual reproduction is the process by which an egg and a sperm unite to form a zygote. In this method of reproduction, half of the chromosomes arises from the female parent and half from the male parent. The phenomenon of crossing over and independent assortment occur through this process which leads to genetic diversity. Hence, the offsprings produced are not genetically identical to the parent cells and to each other.
