During periods of intense exercise, cells do not receive enough oxygen to perform the normal process of aerobic cellular respiration.

As a result, the cells resort to anaerobic respiration, which produces only 1/20th of the energy produced during the aerobic process. This alternative version of cellular respiration produces lactic acid as waste, which results in muscle soreness. Which of the following statements does the above information support?

a. Cellular respiration is affected by temperature.

b. Cellular respiration is affected by cell hydration.

c. Cellular respiration is affected by the availability of reactants.

d. Cellular respiration is affected by sugar production.

    The answer is C.)

    Explanation:

Cellular respiration is often influenced by reactants. In this case, the reactants are oxygen and glucose with the aim of producing ATP. At the beginning of exercise, oxygen supply reduces steadily triggering an increase in ventilation (increased breathing). Glucose stored in the muscles are also depleted, triggering glycogenolysis (break down of glycogen from the liver to make more glucose available). During intense exercise, the body cannot cope with a great increase in oxygen demand and therefore resorts to anaerobic respiration to produce energy for exercise. On the other hand, looking at option a., Temperature can affect the rate of reaction, but as long as reactants are available, the reaction will still continue.

    c. Cellular respiration is affected by the availability of reactants.

    Explanation:

No doubt the cell has less availability of oxygen (reactant). When the oxygen cannot be efficiently pumped to cells for proper cellular respiration to occur the respiration shifts to anaerobic that produces lactic acid as waste and soreness occurs. If cell has a sufficient amount of oxygen the cellular is no more effected.
