Mendel's law of segregation states that genes occur in pairs and that each gamete receives only one allele of each pair (in other words, the alleles segregate). An individual who has a copy of the 1 allele and a copy of the 2 allele passes on allele 1 to 50% of the gametes and allele 2 to the other 50% of the gametes.
