A student is proposing a model to compare prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. The student is using string to model the cell membrane, beans to represent the ribosomes, and pipe cleaners to model the chromosomes. How will the student need to revise the model to demonstrate a prokaryotic cell rather than a eukaryotic cell?

The pipe cleaners should be made circular to signify that prokaryotes do not have chromosomes

    Explanation:

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have a number of distinct features. Prokaryotes lack membrane-bound organelles, whereas eukaryotic cells are compartmentalised with different organelles performing different function.

As a result, prokaryotes no not possess a nucleus, where the DNA is housed in the cell. Eukaryoric DNA is organised into chromosomes. However, prokaryotic DNA is much more simple (and there is usually much less of it), and instead of forming chromosomes, it is organised into a singular, circular molecule, sometimes called the bacterial chromosome.

Therefore, the student will need to take one pipe cleaner and form a circle with it to make the bacterial DNA.
