Humpbacks are mainly black or grey with white undersides to their flukes, flippers and bellies. They are usually 15m long. Their long flippers are one of their more noticeable characteristics. They are also extremely active from flapping their flippers and flukes on the surface of the sea.

In studies of humpback whales off the coast of Maine, lob-tailing is often coupled with another feeding technique called "bubble-net feeding." The whale slaps its tail to scare fish away from the surface. Then it descends, blows a giant bubble to corral the fish into dense schools, and lunges up with its jaws open wide.
