A 27 year old male with a history of asthma was hospitalized with

afour day history of progressive cough and two days of

spikingfevers. Gram-positive cocci in pairs were cultured from

ablood sample. What is the diagnosis?

    The diagnosis will show the presence of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

    Explanation:

    Actually, it is known that cough and fever are associated with all pneumonia. This means that, a culture will be needed to specifically identify the exact type of pneumonia.

    In this case, Streptococcus pneumoniae was identified by the gram reaction and a test known as optochin-inhibition test.

    The optochin - inhibition test inhibit the growth of streptococcus pneumonia. This occurs at low concentration. Optochin readily mixes with agar medium because it is water soluble.
