the North American Continent is ripping itself apart.

    Explanation:

Landscapes within the western us are characterised by long, parallel mountain ranges separated by down-dropped valleys. These landscapes are a results of continental rifting, or places wherever the continental crust is extending and dilution. because the crust thins, the hot, buoyant layer (the asthenosphere) rises. Eventually, the layer upwells therefore on the brink of the surface that rock that erupts onto the surface. Continental rifting processes are showcased within the steep fault escarpments and active volcanoes that characterize the western us.

Rift valleys are sites where a large landmass is ripping itself apart. Africa, for example, will eventually split along the Great Rift Valley system.
